Career Development staff at the undergraduate and graduate levels are committed to supporting faculty to create opportunities for students to discern career options and find personal vocational fulfillment. We offer a wide range of resources, events, and career-related services to support all of our students, and we look forward to exploring with you how we can do that better together. 

How We Support Faculty

• Request presentations, workshops, and events by emailing your academic college's assigned Consultant or by filling out our Request Form
• Reserve space for events and meetings in the Center for Career Development on the 5th floor of the Duncan Student Center by filling out the following Form
• Get connected with alumni by utilizing IrishCompass
• Provide guidance for how to respond to employer and recruiter inquiries
• Provide guidance on how to write an effective letter of recommendation
• We are offering faculty and administrators the ability to request an account for access to our new career management system Handshake and explore all that it offers. Irish Compass

IrishCompass is an exclusive, online community which provides an opportunity for Notre Dame students and alumni to facilitate career-related connections. Students can benefit from the system by:

• Connecting with alumni for career networking, mentorship, and job shadow opportunities. 
• Asking career-related questions through industry-specific discussion forums.
• Accessing exclusive online resources for career discernment and networking tips.

As a Notre Dame faculty member, you are provided the opportunity to create and Irish Compass account. You may find value in creating an account to:

• Re-connect with former students
• Find guest speakers for your class
• Find industry contacts to introduce to your students 

Fielding Requests from Employers and Recruiters

At some point you may be contacted by an employer, recruiter, or alumni who is interested in identifying candidates for positions. The Center for Career Development supports the National Association of Colleges and Employers's (NACE) recommendations for offering job posting information to all students, which include:

• All candidates should have equal access to the opportunity.
• Colleges and employers should support informed and responsible decision-making by candidates.
• All aspects of the recruiting process should be fair and equitable to candidates and employing organizations.
• Career services professionals and faculty involved in recruiting should provide generally comparable services to all employers.
• As required by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), any disclosure of student information outside of the educational institution will be with prior consent of the student unless health and/or safety considerations necessitate the dissemination of such information. Both career services professionals and faculty will exercise sound judgment and fairness in maintaining the confidentiality of student information, regardless of the source, including written records, reports, and computer data bases.

Writing Recommendations Letters

Letters of recommendation are often used by an organization's hiring officials to gather additional information about a candidate.

It is assumed that a confidential letter of recommendation will provide a candid viewpoint of an applicant's abilities and professional promise. The letter of recommendation should give a picture of the candidate's personal characteristics, performance and experience, strengths, capabilities, and professional promise from someone who has worked closely with the candidate.

To assist you in this process, here is a sample recommendation letter.  

Handshake Recruiting Portal

Handshake is the primary employment recruiting portal for University of Notre Dame graduate and undergraduate students. The system allows students to easily connect with employers and find full-time employment and internship opportunities, career event information, and employer recruitment activities. In addition, organizations use Handshake to identify qualified students for open positions and to manage their on-campus recruitment and employment events.  

As a member of the Notre Dame faculty or staff, you can create a Handshake login and see the same information that students see.

Post an Internship Opportunity for Students - All Notre Dame students have access to Handshake. Faculty and staff may utilize the system by creating a brief description of their internship opportunities and research projects to gather student applications.  You can receive and review students' resumes or applications via e-mail or in an online application packet. In order to utilize Handshake to hire students, you will need to create an “employer” account in Handshake and post your internship/research project as a “job.” If you have questions about using Handshake, call us at 1-5200. We’re glad to help!
